Summer Safety Reminders

With the summer season upon us, please remember to review the security measures for any vacant or temporarily unoccupied properties.

If a home is currently undergoing construction, or if you or a neighbor plan to be away for an extended period, it is essential to ensure adequate safeguards are in place. We highly recommend utilizing security cameras, arranging for professional security patrols, or scheduling regular property checks by a trusted individual to maintain safety and peace of mind. 

For residents going out of town on short-term trips, the San Diego Police Department's Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol (RSVP) provides free Vacation House Checks. Uniformed volunteers will periodically inspect your home’s exterior to ensure it remains secure while you are away. You can request this service online through the official SDPD Vacation House Check Application at least two weeks before your departure.  https://www.sandiego.gov/police/services/vacation-house-check

Take these recommended actions before your trip: 

• Lock all doors and windows. Use dowel rods to secure sliding doors and windows.

• Consider leaving an internal light and external lights on to deter criminals. If possible, use timers to schedule them to come on.

• Provide an emergency contact with a key. 

• Cancel services such as housekeepers who might unknowingly access your home. List all gardeners, pet caregivers, pool services or others who may access the property on the Vacation House Check Form.

• Pull in all trash containers from the curb.

• Limit/stop package deliveries that may be placed at your front door.
