City Fee For Trash Service - City staff formally presented its cost-of-service study for trash service results to the San Diego City Council on April 14. The newly proposed FIRST YEAR fees are $36.72 - $47.59 per month (this is a base fee, additional charges will apply if you need additional number of containers). If approved this these charges will be added to Homeowners Property Tax Bills.
What Happens next... Starting today Wednesday April 23rd through Friday April 25th all homeowners will be receiving a document from the city titled "NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING" with a heading Proposed Solid West Management Fee" and the first subheading "Public Hearing Information." The mailer is EIGHT PAGES long. Please do not throw this mailer away until you have considered your options.
Every homeowner can "protest" this charge and if majority of the 233,000 homeowners do so, then the city cannot move forward with this plan to charge homeowners a fee for trash service. If you do not take action to protest the FEE, your inaction will be counted as as a yes, you want to pay the fee.
The heading and explanation about the right to protest is on PAGE SIX of the mailer and on PAGE SEVEN is a form that must be filled out and signed and then mailed or personally delivered to the city clerks office if you wish to protest this FEE. There is no electronic means of submitting the form. The city is making this as difficult as possible, you must cut it out, sign it, put it in your own envelope, pay for postage, and send it back.
As part of this proposed new service the city would replace all three trash cans (black, blue and green) at each of the 233,000 homes receiving service. This would be at no charge to the homeowner. As a comparison, the roll out of the green composting cans cost the city approximately Fifteen Million Dollars. So at a time of a 258 Million Dollar city budget deficit the city is planning on spending in the neighborhood of 45 Million Dollars to replace all of the cans in the city and then send all current cans to the landfill.
In conclusion please consider your option to Protest this FEE that will be charged on your property tax bill and remember failure to timely file the form will count as a "yes, you can increase my property tax bill."
Second Summer Trash Pick Up -
If the above FEE for service plan is adopted by the city, it would make it much more difficult for Mission Beach to get a Second Summer Trash Pick Up. The Environmental Services Department already considers our Second Summer Trash Pick Up to be gone.
We have new council members that aren't aware of the severity of the problem. So it's imperative that Mission Beach residents and businesses flood the inboxes of every City Council member and the Mayor's Staff requesting that the second trash pick up be retained emphasizing that the second summer trash pick up is not a convenience but necessary due to health and safety concerns that affect every Mission Beach resident, business and the 10's of Thousands of visitors to Mission Beach.
