Roll out of Organic Waste Containers - Residents in the Mission Beach community with waste hauling services from the City of San Diego will receive a kitchen pail for in-home food scrap collection and a green bin from September 26 – 29, 2023. The delivered new green bin will be placed as close as possible in front of the customer’s residence.

Food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings (referred to as organic waste) can all be discarded in the green bin for weekly collection on the same day as the customer’s regularly scheduled trash collection day and normal collection location.

Residents can exchange their delivered green bin for a different size or request additional green bins.

  • Please allow one business day after receiving the delivered container before requesting a green bin exchange for a different size or an additional green bin.

  • Residents who wish to request a green bin exchange will be able to do so at no charge within 14 calendar days of initial delivery and only if the green bin is unused and still new.

  • All green bin requests can be submitted on the Get It Done or by calling 858-694-7000.

Our new Communications Toolkit is designed to help you easily share content through your communications channels and help point people to OrganicWasteRecycleSD.org for helpful tips and resources in multiple languages. While recycling organic waste is new for many of us, it’s a great way to do our part to help reduce the impacts of climate change and protect the environment for future San Diegans.

To help get the word out, we’ve created a downloadable toolkit that includes:

  • A fact sheet with important details about organic waste recycling and what it means for San Diego. This serves as a quick first look at the program and is easy to share.

  • Social media posts that you’re encouraged to tailor to your voice and share on your platforms along with images in the image folder.

  • Talking points to be used as a reference when speaking about the program.

  • Sample newsletter, eblast and website content that can be customized and shared in email or online updates to your audience.

We anticipate that residents in your community may be concerned about potentials smells and pests. In addition to our website with useful resources, we encourage you to also share our Keep Your Green Bin Clean Handout.

To learn more about the City’s new greens bins and collection service for organic waste recycling, please refer to the New Organic Waste Recycling Program and Organic Waste Recycling Frequently Asked Questions webpages.
